It's just been announced! The Pantone Color of the Year for 2013 is... Emerald. Last year, it was Tangerine, an exciting bright and bold reddish orange. Emerald is also bright, but a deep clear bluish green that's more cooler than the warm sage, olives and forest colors. Shown above, Emerald is the background color.
Looking back over the year, Tangerine showed up in fashion and in accents like dishes, art and fabrics for interiors. Color of the year or not, we didn't see a lot of Tangerine walls or sofas in the magazines, so I'm predicting an equally slow embrace of Emerald. Most other color trending sites such as Yolo Colorhouse, Sherwin Williams and other organizations such as the Color Association of the United States are still talking retro bright pastels, cool blues and turquoises and earthier yellows and neutrals.
Emerald plays very nicely with blues, warm whites, neutrals and retro pastels, especially the pale yellows, turquoise and yellow greens. But because it's so bright, use caution when mixing with other colors such as oranges and reds. Emerald works best as the brightest color in the composition and will make traditional combinations such as blue, yellow and white fresh and interesting.
Until next time!
