Design Tips: Ideas for Gift Wrapping Difficult Items

A tuba. A rubber duckie. A model plane with an 8 foot wingspan. What do these have in common? Why, yes, they would make for an interesting juggling act, but beyond that, these three items were categories in the 2012 Scotch Brand's "Most Gifted Wrapper" contest!

If I were wrapping those things I'd have looked for or made a big cardboard box that would fit the oddly-shaped items and wrap that! I've decorated large boxes with spray paint (fun, but not so green), old wallpaper or even sheets, tarps and rope. A handy place to find big pieces of cardboard is a bike shop or the parts department of a car dealership. Often, they are happy to get rid of it.

This year's "Most Gifted Winner" contest winner is a lot more creative than me. Lia Griffeth, from Portland, Oregon, turned a roll of wrapping paper into a big bow for the airplane! The talented Lia is the creative director for Elli.com, an online paper and stationery store and the sister blog site Ellinee.com. She says "I have always had a thing for paper" and she comes from an art and graphic design background.

For a full article about Lia and the contest, see "Portland's Lia Griffeth, 'Most Gifted Wrapper,' present with tips for the rest of us" that appeared in The Oregonian recently, and is available on The Oregonian's website oregonlive.com

Both of Lia's sites are full of beautiful and creative DIY ideas and tutorials such as making baskets out of grocery sacks. Elli.com also offers handmade cards, invitations and other party and holiday essentials for all occasions. Check them out here!

Until next time!
