Getting my hair to be straighter is thankfully not one of the beauty issues I have to wrestle with, but many of my friends spend a lot of time, effort and money getting gorgeous straight locks. They rejoiced when the Brazilian Keratin style of straighteners became popular recently, but many have started to turn a skeptical eye thanks to recent reports of formaldehyde hidden in many of the formulas. A report by the Environmental Working Group found here breaks it down. The chemical is used to help hold the hair straight. It not only is in the air and breathed in during and after application, but it also seeps into the scalp.
Formaldehyde sounds really scary and can cause symptoms ranging from a runny nose and sore throat to cancer. Pregnant women and people with lung issues, like smokers or those with asthma, should be particularly careful about avoiding this known carcinogen. The best way to make sure you’re not exposed is to avoid the questionable hair straighteners all together, but realistically that’s not entirely possible.
Thankfully, with more exposure to these ingredients companies are starting to make formaldehyde-free options. The best thing to do is to ask your stylist what brand they use when you make your appointment, then visit the EWG’s report to see if your brand is listed. Google the name to see if any other reports have surfaced. And, if you’re not happy with the results, ask your salon if they can use a cleaner formula or make an appointment elsewhere.
One way to keep your hair looking good and perhaps lengthen the time between the straightening treatments is to use good products at home. That’s why we’re giving one lucky reader a set of Rusk’s Deep Shine Smooth Keratin Care at home products. The set includes a shampoo, conditioner and deep penetrating cream. The line is designed to lock out humidity and provide thermal protection leaving the hair smooth, shiny and manageable.
To enter, all you have to do is leave a comment on this post with either why you could use these products or tell us about your biggest hair disaster. We’ll pick a winner next Wednesday, September 28th at 8pm ET. This contest is only open to US residents. Good luck!
