Design Tips: Alessi Accessories are very modern

Puzzle time! Guess when this handsome condiment set was designed. It's currently in production, and it's made of glass and polished steel. And it's available at Hive, based in Portland, Oregon.

Ettore Sottsass designed this set for Alessi in... 1978! Did you guess it? Wasn't everyone else doing owls and mushrooms and big wooden spoons then? This set is as modern now as it was in '78, but it sure is inspired by Bauhaus designs of the 1920s as well as the Art Deco and Streamlined styles of the late 1920s and the '30s.

The Italian housewares company Alessi has been making stunning sculptural accessories, furniture, table wares, and house wares since 1921. Many of their best-known iconic designs are every bit as relevant, beautiful and desirable today as they were when they were first designed.

Pictured below are a just a few of the still hugely popular Alessi designs. See if you can tell when they were first produced!

1. 1923 Cocktail Shakers.
2. 1934 Beer Tray.
3. 1990 "Juicy Salif" citrus juicer designed by Philippe Stark.
4. 1979 "Espresso 9090" espresso maker designed by Richard Sapper.
5. 1948 Round Wire Basket.
6. 2009 "La Stanza dello Scirocco" centerpiece.
7. 1985 "9093 Kettle" designed by Michael Graves
