Starting Green

Green! A color, a lifestyle, a cause. The word Green has become an important part of describing our lives. It affects how we eat, dress, clean, drive and create. We all want to do our part for the health of our planet. Curious as how I can do my part, I hit the online bookstore!

I found some great resources to really make an impact, after all, graphic design is often the first step in the process to creating a product. If I can be more efficient and aware of my role, I can make an impact!

Green Graphic Design by Brian Dougherty with Celery Design Collaborative, explains the ability of designers to communicate, persuade, and ultimately spread a socially and ecologically responsible message to both consumers and corporations.

SustainAble: A Handbook of Materials and Applications for Graphic Designers and Their Clients by Aaris Sherin. SustainAble provides the information designers need to be ahead of the curve on sustainability issues, inform them on sustainable applications and to approach the issue of sustainability in the areas of paper, printing, formats, materials, inks, and executions.

Sustainable Graphic Design: Tools, Systems and Strategies for Innovative Print Design by Wendy Jeslicka. Graphic design is frequently thought of as a purely decorative effort. Yet these efforts can be responsible for shocking impacts on natural resources just to produce a barely-glanced-at catalog or mail piece. Sustainable Graphic Design: Tools, Systems, and Strategies for Innovative Print Design helps designers view graphic design as a holistic process. By exploring eco-conscious materials and production techniques, it shows designers how to create more effective and more sustainable designs.

Designing Sustainable Packaging by Scott Boylston. This is a practical book on creating packaging prototypes that reflect sustainable and ecologically sound principles.

One of my favorite parts about the role of being a designer is the ability to change and grow to fit the needs of my clients, and as a Green designer, I can now fit the needs of the world!
