DIY Shutter Ideas

My sister recently bought a new house and she decided to remove the shutters off the exterior of her house and she was just going to throw them away! So... I took them! There are so many creative ways to use old restored shutters throughout your home. Some people have shutters just lying around but for those of you who don't, you can find shutters at an architectural salvage in your area. Just repaint your shutters and remember to try fun paint colors to really make your shutters pop!

Hang your shutters on the wall or above your desk to hold photos and papers. You can also hang a few shutters in a row as unique art. Alternate the colors of the shutters for even more interest, like the shutter headboard below.

Shutters don't have to be necessarily country, rustic, or shabby chic either. These shutters on this bookcase are more refined and they can enclose anything you don't want sitting out.

Use your shutter as a coffee table. Use ottomans, side tables, or a smaller coffee table as a base.

My personal favorite, use your shutters as a headboard. These bold colors really make a statement in the room and anchors the bed.

Make sure to have fun experimenting with ideas for your shutters! Have fun with it and choose unexpected colors for your shutters, if it doesn't work you can always paint them again! Have a great weekend!

Making use of old shutters is something we love to see here and you show some really great ideas.

One word of caution. Please, Please, Please be careful when handling old shutters. Many were finished using lead paints and these will cause some serious health problems if you do not take precautions. Here is the EPA site for lead poisoning

I love your ideas for using old shutters in new applications. We love to see shutters recycled.
